| Twelve-step programs offer support for those in recovery from addictions and co-dependency. Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in 1935. It was followed by Al-anon, Alateen, and Al-Anon Adult Children of Alcoholics, for family members and friends of alcoholics. Other programs such as Narcotics Anonymous and Overeaters Anonymous are based on AA's 12 Steps and Traditions.
These programs form a fellowship of individuals supporting one another's recovery by sharing experience, strength, and hope. They are spiritual but not religious. There are no dues or membership fees. Everything shared at meetings is kept confidential, and members preserve their anonymity by sharing only first names. There are no requirements for membership other than a desire for one's own recovery and growth.
Core 12-Step program teachings are:- powerlessness over addictive substances, over circumstances, and over other people
- self-knowledge and acceptance
- reliance on a Higher Power
- giving up attempts to control and manage the behavior of others, described as detachment
